Introducing a guide to the IIoT

The concept of Industry 4.0

There is increasing interest in the concept of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things (IoT) which can bring significant benefits to any organisation’s maintenance function, whether you are in a manufacturing business or working as a maintenance service provider.

In the world we live in today, it seems that everything is connected by some form of wireless connection; phones, watches, TVs, fridges, washing machines, doorbells, lights… the list goes on and on. All can be monitored and controlled remotely by Applications (Apps) and software on your computer, tablet or phone.

This network of connected equipment is called the Internet of Things (IoT).

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)

In short, the Internet of Things, is the network of physical objects embedded with electronics, software, sensors and connectivity to enable them to collect and exchange data. This has mostly been based around consumer goods but is spreading into the industrial world.

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) specifically refers to the application of the IoT within Manufacturing and Service companies.
